Day 3 - January 4th

Updated: Jan 6, 2019

Good morning everyone,

Today we woke up around 6:20 am and went to grab breakfast at a local’s home right next to where we are staying. The woman lives alone and decided to “adopt” me and CJ, feeding us breakfast and dinner everyday. After breakfast we headed to the school and started painting the school. We had 6 parents volunteering, which made the job a lot easier. Although we have the language barrier, they always try to speak English and their smiles are priceless whenever they can understand what we say. We feel part of a big family here, and everyone wants to make sure we are happy.

After lunch, CJ and I taught English to first graders, which was an amazing experience. The kids are very respectful and incredibly smart, which made our job very rewarding. One of the highlights was playing the music “head, shoulders, knees and toes,” after teaching them the name of body parts. The kids had so much fun singing the song and it made it a lot easier for them to associate what they had just learned. After teaching we went back to painting and organizing everyone to be as effective as possible.

We finished painting around 2pm as the kids and the parents had to go to the Mosque to pray. We are staying in a very traditional muslim village in Thailand and religion is incredibly important to all. So, CJ and I did most of the cleaning with the help of some students and were done for the day. After work we headed to the PhangNga viewpoint and then headed to the pier where we had dinner at a family restaurant. After lots of mosquitos bites and incredibly delicious food, we headed back to our home and settled in for the day.

We’ve been making a lot of progress and are very excited to see where we’ll get with this project.

Love,

Juan and CJ
