The project will be sustained:
  • The government provides the food and the school organizes the cooks and pays for the wood/gas.

  • In addition, the school also has a small vegetable garden, which I will help to expand, in order to increase the production of fresh vegetables that will supplement the feeding scheme.

  • Furthermore, with the efficient, purposeful design, this kitchen will be a permanent addition to the school - not abandoned like kitchens have been in the past.

Past Experience:

This past summer I received over $16,000 dollars in scholarship money for Service Projects in South Africa, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Fiji Islands. By doing community service I found a way to show my gratitude for everything that has happened in my life so far, to offer children around the world oppurtunities to pursue their dreams. Don’t Forget About Africa is a project that will have a big impact in the lives of many families, and by having this kitchen, these kids will be able to enjoy a better quality of food, and will not have to worry about the dangers of food poisoning or diseases in general.

Future Goals:

  • Spread the project across all the regions in South Africa.

  • Grow project, teaching others about the importance of a hygienic, constant source of food and send these individuals out across Africa.

  • Spread the project beyond Africa and modify to the rest of the developing world.

Facts about global malnutrition:

  1. Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five years old - 3.1 million children each year.

  2. One out of six children -- roughly 100 million -- in developing countries is underweight.

  3. South Africa has a population of 53 million people and 1 in 4 suffer from hunger.

  4. 66 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone.

  5. With unemployment levels at 25 percent nationally and over 15 million people receiving social grants, people do not have enough money to buy food.
